λάθραGreek for “in secret”

Built in quiet.

Lathrion is a holding company. We build and run software that finds things out: who wins an election, how any two people are connected, where on Earth a place is, what is worth watching. Seven products are public. The rest are under wraps.

[02] Doctrine

Six rules.
No exceptions.

What we hold ourselves to, written down so it is harder to forget.

  1. I

    Say less. Ship more.

We don’t announce what doesn’t exist. Products launch when they work, and then the work does the talking.

  2. II

    Accuracy is the product.

A confident wrong answer is the worst thing software can give you. When we can’t be sure, we say so, or we show nothing at all.

  3. III

    Build the whole thing.

Data pipelines, models and interfaces are made in-house, so every number we publish is one we can explain.

  4. IV

    Free at the front door.

Most of what we make costs nothing and asks for nothing: no account, no paywall. Trust first. Everything else later.

  5. V

    One parent, many names.

Each product keeps its own name and earns its own reputation. The parent company stays in the background.

  6. VI

    Play the long game.

A conglomerate gets built one company at a time. We started with software. We don’t plan to stop there.

LATH-ree-on

/ˈlæθ.ri.ɑn/

Lathrion is a made-up word built on λάθρα, Ancient Greek for “secretly.” It comes from λανθάνω, “to escape notice,” the root that also gave Greek λήθη, the forgetting of the river Lethe, and ἀλήθεια, truth: literally, the state of not being hidden.

We like that one root holds both. The work happens out of sight. What comes out has to be true.
